After leaving Kakadu, we travelled south down the Stuart Highway, heading towards Three Ways Roadhouse to turn east onto the Barkly Highway and on to QLD. Our first stop-over was at Bitter Springs, 2km from Mataranka. Bitter Springs are natural warm artesian springs, that flow amoung the palms. Lovely spot to float on pool noodles and soak off the red dust - a great way to finish off the day.
Before we set off the next morning, we drove into Mataranka for a swim in the Mataranka Thermal Pools. These pools are also fed by artesian springs, but the pools were lined with rock by the Americans during WWII, as a swimming pool for their officers. As with Bitter Springs, the water was lovely and warm, and crystal clear. Luxurious start to a long day's travel!
All was going well, until we realised there was a croc in the spring with us!
